about

Memories of Maine, taken aside and told a secretive story about the nest being flown and time not healing, candles in the kitchen lighting the way home. Fifty years between us, my naive reassurances of a better future draw a muted response. You’ve known all along that I am just a makeshift child, here to help you make sense of it all.

30 years pass drawing ever closer to the past. Reading a brave journal, recoiling at the depth of another’s loss. Projecting sympathy is all that can be done, not really much worse than the trite offerings I would make in person… ‘always here… anything to help…’

Whilst caring for our kin the world overtakes us all, as it will. Individual stories cascade and reverberate, smeared to the point where I can’t recognise you at all, a failure to see the single life. Thousands of threnodies playing at the same time become a whitewashed noise, stories inured, candle lights flickering ever fainter.

Were we sleeping? All along a noxious side-plot of vacuous ambition was feeding blinkered dreams and entitled rage. You think that it was kind of inevitable and I’m sad to say you were right. Circling a dying campfire, memories of a final question evoked… Is it better to be denied a future if that future holds no hope?
